DO IT DUANE

 mascot Duane doing it

SaltyBet is a free game that allows you to bet virtual "salt", a form of funny currency, on live competitive fighting games controlled by an AI (or as the legendary chat says, two slaves hidden in Salty's <the founder of SaltyBet> basement).
Yep

The Salty currency can't be used for anything and not actually worth any money whatsoever, but it feels good to have some salt in your veins.  After creating an account, all players start with 400 salty bucks.  All players are tracked in a database and refreshing the page will not undo a current bet.  If you lose all your Saltybucks, you will receive a small bailout of 10 bucks.  The bailout will increase by level, and you gain levels from the number of bets you've actually taken part in, not by amount bet.

"You must climb your way out of the salt mines." -Salty

There is an option to donate $5 and become a member of the Salty Illuminati, which will give you certain features:

IN SALT WE TRUST
  • You will always have at least $666 Salty Bucks to stay out of the mines (although technically you are still in the mines at the lowest value.  According to chat, 10,000 salts is considered "out of the mines".)
  • Your name will appear in gold across the entire site.
  • You will be able to see your entire betting history, statistics for players/characters, betting statistics of past tourneys, change your username, and gain access to an exclusive forum.

Saltybet as of 10/16/2013 (and yes, 1.4k salt is delicious)

Now onto the second most entertaining part of SaltyBet: the characters.  The fighters are from a pool of literally thousands using the MUGEN fighting game engine.  Spectators must carefully risk their hard earned salt on their favorite.  But you really can't judge the advantage by just looking.  Chibi anime girls will turn out to be monstrously overpowered fighting beasts and easily eliminate her opponent, a giant octopus monster, with ease.

According to Philippa Warr of PCGamer, Salty Bet is "a pop culture royal rumble we can’t stop watching"

The number one draw that keeps me coming back to this silly game is the chat.  The stream service, Twitch.tv, comes with a text based chat system and when upsets or waifus win, all hell breaks loose.  There is no moderation and the people can say pretty much whatever they want at any rate they want.  Some of the chat's favorite encounters are "Darude - Sandstorm" played on the stream radio..."DODODODO", watching the loading screen with our boy Duane, and watching Touhou (waifu characters) super beam giant squids.

It's free, it's fun, and it's addicting once you get to know a few characters.  SaltyBet is a pop culture revolution online and it is here to stay...now if only I could get outta these damn salt mines.
