How Much Waste Is Generated by Americans Daily?

The Puente Hills Landfill in America

The United States of America is a country full of virtues and promises. Hundreds of years ago, the May Flower brought numerous people to America to start a new life. Each day people from all over the world arrive in America with similar ideas as the Europeans had, and that is making America one of the leading countries of diversity. Partially, due to a population increase, we are generating more garbage than ever. As a result, a massive amount of waste is produced daily. Approximately 1.35 billion pounds of waste is produced in the United States daily, and about 4.5 pounds per person.

Will our children have an opportunity to enjoy the clean and green world?

Where do we get rid of this enormous amount of trash? What methods can we employ? One way to dispose of garbage is a burning facility. However, as the process is performed, a variety of toxic chemicals are being released into the atmosphere such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, particulates, and sulfur dioxide. This leads to many harmful side effects on the population’s health, including asthma and nervous system damage. Another way to deal with our trash is to bury it. This is dangerous to underground water supplies, the garbage leeches into our water system after time; garbage absorbs into the ground and releases deadly substances into the soil like a toxic soup. It not only destroys human lives, but also plants and animals as well. Clearly, this amount of trash should be sounding an alarm bell to everyone to wake up and take notice of our environment we live in. Furthermore, it has a huge impact on the future of our environment. The main principle of previous generations was to make the world a better place for the next generation. How do we ensure our children will live in a healthier environment in the future? People should always try to make and leave the world a better place for their children, but they rarely think of a clean environment as being so significant for all the living lives on earth. Now is time for every one of us to take actions by recycling, using paper bags, planting trees, limiting the use of plastic bottles or plastic bags, and self-educating on protecting the environment. We should consider our actions because a small change today will make a big difference tomorrow.

  1. This post makes me want to invent something that would be beneficial to the environment. It's really scary how much toxins we release into the air just by driving cars alone. I know we throw a lot of things away that not only harm the environment but also harms animals. We also have a problem with being wasteful and we don't even realize it.

    1. You have some very good ideas, we need more people that think like you .
I also hope with the technology we have and are developing that we can invent a better way to handle the waster and pollution that we create
With education programs in schools when children are young is a good way to start to get the message out.

  2. Angela, I definitely agree with you in that we have to do everything we can to help our precious environment. Did you know roughly 70% water bottles will ultimately end up in landfills and in different bodies of water? It's horrible to think that we can alter the environment so much. Waste is something most folks don't consider, but if we all do a little bit I think we can help tremendously!

    1. I never used to think about where all the water bottles went, I try to think now about all things I use and how they will be disposed of.
I have started to buy less things in plastic and bottles, you are correct there is so much each person can do even by just changing his/ her buying habits a little bit.

  3. I think we should create something to destroy the trash instead of burn it because right now alot of people is really smart to create technology,
