Govenrment and Food Regulation

America is notoriously know for being one of the most obese countries in the world. In effort to change our diets and our health habits overall, the government has started to ban or promote certain physical activity or ingredients in food. The most recent food ingredient to be banned is trans fats. It is a factor in a lot of different health problems, one of the major ones is coronary heart disease. Trans fats are also known for raising bad cholesterol and lowering the amount of good cholesterol.



As I mentioned before, the government is constantly trying to change regulations on certain things, such as trans fats. Another product that is greatly restricted in advertising and in other ways is cigarettes. They have to warnings on each individual package, and if this is the case for cigarettes, shouldn't it be for all products that can cause harm to our health? That is a question that I have a hard time answering. I do not believe that the government should start strictly regulating our diets, but at the same time ingredients in food that cause harm to should be banned or regulated. The government needs to find a balance, and doing too little or too much will create unrest among certain people.

  1. I like and agree with what you had to say. If this and that is bad for us, then why even have it? Or per say, why have it in the first place? Food is such an addiction to all of us; we always want to eat constantly. Same goes for those who are addicted to cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, etc.

  2. I Agree with most what you have said. But, I would like to point out it is the consumer responsibility to know what they are buying and eating. If they knew what half of the stuff that are in of what they are eating and how stuff is made. They probably wouldn't eat as much or non of it in that matter.

  3. I didn't know that the government is starting to ban trans fats. Although the intent of that move may be good, I don't think it will make too much of a difference. There are so many chemicals in our food anyway that are banned in other countries for possible health risks. Also, there are probably plenty of politicians in the back pockets of some giant food companies, so any major legislation that would truly improve food quality and safety will probably be lobbied to its death or shot down immediately.
