Bloodsucking Craze

Scary, right?
Just what is it about vampires that make the girls squeal in excitement and the boys turn their heads in moderate interest, but interest nonetheless? A vampire's sole intent is to drain us regular old humans of our very life source: our blood. Their sole desire, more often than not, leads to quite a few dead humans, and yet we are almost completely entranced by them. Since the 12th century, myths about bloodsuckers have floated and spread across the entire world, and ever since then people have been terrified of the possibility of vampires. Until now, that is.

In the past couple decades especially, the popularity of vampires has increased titanically. Books and TV shows such as The Vampire Diaries, True Blood, Twilight, and Being Human have been much more successful than not, and those are just a few titles. I myself have fallen victim to the alluring spell of the vampire craze (apart from Twilight, which was maybe the worst series ever written in my opinion, even setting aside the sparkly vampires), but I have to ask myself, why are they so alluring?

Twilight, even with the terrible story, was wildly successful amongst preteen and teen girls. I believe that this is only true due to the fact that the author Stephanie Meyer wrote her vampires as creatures that could barely be classified as vampires. For one, they sparkle in the sunlight, as I mentioned earlier, for two, they don't feed on humans, and for three, they don't have fangs. What kind of vampire doesn't have fangs? Meyer made them appear a whole lot friendlier than how vampires are typically portrayed. I believe that this is the reason why Twilight was so popular with younger girls, apart from the romance.

When it comes to almost any other vampire related TV show, book, or movie, the vampires kill and feed on humans, burn in the sunlight rather than sparkle, and they most definitely parade around with a set of fierce looking fangs. It would be logical to assume that society would not be as fascinated with vampires as they are after hearing that. However, that is not the case. If you ask me, I think that a part of the reason why vampires are so popular is because in TV shows and movies, the vampire is almost always played by a man or woman who is undoubtedly sexy, and therefore grabs the attention of the viewers. That can't be the only reason though, can it? For some people it can, but not for everybody.

For those of you reading this, what's your opinion on why vampires are so popular in today's day and age?

  1. I remember Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Its an older TV series. It aired from 97-03. That was a pretty exciting show. My daughter (6 years old) loves the Monster High TV show, and she collects the dolls. They have a doll that is a vampire named Draculaura. I personally think that it has made my daughter less afraid of the monsters, and some movies that have vampires or werewolves in them. Kids shows finally got it right with putting things that kids are usually afraid of into a cartoon.

  2. I used to watch a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer back in the day where vampires are scary and disintegrate out in the sun. Now it seems vampires are sex objects or fetishes perhaps? Don't forget the werewolves too--oh yeah and zombies...

The stories of vampires is actually quite universal. Each culture has their own version of a vampire whether it be blood sucking or looking sexy to seduce prey. I think that since the concept of the vampire has been integrated into our culture for a very long time, the subject still remains popular as each every incarnation changes to meet modern culture. Maybe in the future, vampires may have a new appearance or definition?
