The Simpsons. The end of an era

The legendary animated comedy show The Simpsons created by Matt Groening, is quite synonymous with the 90's and Early 00's. The granddaddy of animated sitcoms. We all know it, we've all watched it, and we've all most likely spent money on their cheap merchandise, but will it remain a cultural phenomenon forever?
It all started when the iconic, yellow but all too relate-able Simpsons family first aired in 1989. The Simpsons family containing Homer the dad, Marge the mom, Bart the son, Lisa and Maggie the two daughters, Grandpa the grandpa, Santa's Little Helper the dog, and there cat, quickly captured hearts all over and had held that grasp for over a decade. Many aspects of this animated family have been seen as relate-able to the everyday folks and children that watched. Tuning in every Sunday to watch The Simpsons after the big game on Fox for many years had been a weekly ritual for many families and children. Every episode beginning with a slightly varied intro that has no doubt been drilled into all our minds.

However the variation could only last so long until eventually intros were occasionally reused, a sign of creative loss. The decline in content, originality, and laughs began what is normally agreed upon, around the 10th-17th season frame. Now with 24 seasons, countless awards, and even Homers catch phrase "D'oh" added to the English dictionary one would imagine the horse quite beaten.
After having stopped tuning in, I recently happened to catch the end of a new episode and thought the well to be quite dry. Soon after going the episode without a laugh and spending more time watching pesky commercials I had a strange realization. Will The Simpsons continue to go on? Will this once quirky animated sitcom be viewed by our children? All thoughts that one point during this shows life, would never have been imagined.
By the time my kids are born, The Simpsons may very well be a discarded phenomenon remembered and known only by the people that lived through its dominate decades.

  1. I remember coming home everyday from elementary and middle school to watch the Simpsons. I have tried to watch the show a few times last year but it's just too bland. I don't know if it's the show that's boring or I'm getting too old to enjoy it.
